A trip to Sean’s sister who lives on the edge of the Knysna Forest earlier this year provide provided the inspiration for our very own Fynbos Trail Buchu Bru beer.
Jayne’s husband Mike has been brewing up delicious craft beers in a cabin on the edge of the Knysna Forest since long before craft beer and home brewing became such a popular craze. While relaxing on their beautiful small holding we tasted some of his latest brews and discussed the possibility of a special brew, with a fynbos twist, for hikers on the Fynbos trail.
We visited New Plant nursery near Victoria Bay– home to an awesome array of fynbos plants and selected a range of Agathosma species (buchu) which we planted in Jayne and Mikes Garden. Once established, Mike started picking the different buchu leaves and adding them to a blond ale. He used Caledon malt and exclusively South African Southern Promise and Southern Passion hops which gives the beer its tropical fruit flavours, with Agathosma capensis buchu for aroma and added flavour.
Well the final result is a light, crispy beer, ideal for thirsty hikers at the end of a day on the Fynbos Trail.
